Climb the Sydney Harbour Bridge Pylon to the lookout. Most of us don’t know that the four pylons of the Sydney Harbour Bridge serve no real structural purpose for the bridge – they were added for aesthetics only and do not support the bridge at all. For only $9.50 you can climb the 200 steps to the pylon lookout and be 87 metres above the harbour. What a bargain, panoramic view of the city of Sydney for less than a burger and chips! If you can’t justify spending the cash on the bridge climb, this is excellent value and an amazing lookout once you get there. On the climb you will learn about the history of the bridge, how it was constructed including one memorable story about the builder who fell off whilst working and threw his tool bag ahead of him which broke the water tension and saved his own life. You can climb the steps every day except Christmas Day between 10am – 5pm. The south east pylon of the bridge is the climbable one. It’s the one nearest to the city on the southern end and is accessible by foot using the pedestrian pathway which can be accessed from the bridge stairs on Cumberland Street, The Rocks. Remember to take your camera as you’ll have some glorious views including close up views of the Sydney Opera House. For a well deserved break, stop off for a beer on the way back at the Australian hotel. It’s at the bottom of the walkway, next to the ANA hotel. The beer is cold and the pizzas are delicious. Cairns Lagoon ![]() If money is tight, nothing is cheaper than free, and Cairns is home to a beautiful 4800 square metre saltwater lagoon, located right on the Cairns Esplanade, also known as ‘The Nard’ to locals. The Lagoon has become the focal point where life in Cairns revolves around, and is a great place for visitors and locals to hang out. The vast triangular lagoon with it’s dramatic steel fish sculptures is the focal point, providing a water to water view from Shields St in the CBD across the lagoon and out across Trinity Bay. Besides the lagoon (free to use between 6.30am to 10.30pm) the Cairns City Council has built public barbecues as well, where all you need to bring is your food. Every weekend, different performers entertain the public with their music or arts. And we assure you won't have to pay a penny. There are free workout and exercise areas and heaps of shade and open space to sit back and relax. Trained lifeguards patrol the lagoon from 6am to 10pm through summer and from 7am to 9pm in winter. Get down to the lagoon and enjoy life to the fullest in your very own piece of tropical paradise! ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Cairns - FREE Salsa Dancing Lessons ![]() After 9pm, CASA DE MEZE becomes a latin dance venue, the only salsa dance venue in Cairns. The Rocks Market![]() The Rocks Market is held each Saturday and Sunday from 10am to 5pm on Playfair and George streets, close to the CBD. It's a well established and large market (over 150 stalls) which has recently expanded to include a Farmers' market on Friday and Saturday. . The Friday Farmers' market is a great option for city workers looking for an interesting lunch break. On Saturday and Sunday you will also find the usual market fair including arts and crafts, jewellery, fashion, artwork, and photography. The market does have a slightly touristy feel with Australiana and expensive artwork filling some stalls, however there is lots on offer for regular Sydneysiders. The Rocks market could not be easier to get to as it's within walking distance of the CBD and Circular Quay. MAP: click here ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Eveleigh Farmers’ Market ![]() The Eveleigh Farmers’ Market is held each Saturday from 8am to 1pm in the fantastic (and heritage-listed) Eveleigh Market which is an old renovated warehouse-shed in Darlington. The market opened in 2009 and currently has over 80 stall holders. From the website, the market features: "...a vast array of seasonal fresh and value-added produce including organic, bio dynamic foods from farmers and artisan food producers across New South Wales. The array of farm produce will encompass seasonal fruit and vegetables, nuts, organic pasta, free-range pork, artisan cheese, other dairy foods, and baked goods." Queen Victoria Markets it ain't, however it is a great venue and the range of produce on offer is impressive for a market which has just started out. It’s predicted to become a staple of the Sydney farmers' market scene. The market entrance is located at 243 Wilson St, Darlington. The market website has a good guide to getting to the market. Redfern train station is close by, and the market runs a shuttle service to nearby carparks. It’s a rustic venue, good range of food and definitely worth checking out. MAP: click here Back to top |
