WIN BEER – HOW?

To help us name the new Sydney houses that are currently being built, we’ve decided to run a naming competition for all Sleeping guests to be involved in.

If you’re an original thinker or a bit creative, drop us an email with your ideas for the 3 new houses that will hold up to 27 people in Ultimo, Sydney.

The most original ideas will win cases of beer. Just so you know as a starting point, the current Sydney house names are quite conservative – Loft, Campus and Basement. We’re sure you can improve on these for the new houses opening in May sometime.

We look forward to receiving your entries so we have some cool names on opening. Help us with your ideas by emailing us today to E: daloope@sleepingwiththeenemy.com

Green Island

If you’re staying in Cairns then a trip to the Great Barrier Reef is a strong recommendation for anyone. It truly is amazing. Just a tip, if you don’t fancy a long boat trip out to the Main Reef, then go to Green Island which is a beautiful 6000 year old coral cay located in the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park – a premier world heritage site and one of the Seven Natural Wonders of the World.

Just 27km from the hub of Cairns, Green Island is a 45 minute journey across the Coral Sea (a quick trip if you get sea sick) on a high speed catamaran.

There is so much to do once you’re there. There’s some great island walks through the rainforest and swimming and snorkeling are a must. The beaches are so relaxing too.

There is the glass bottom boat for fantastic views of the fish and the beautiful underwater world.

You can buy tickets to Green Island for half and full day tours from a number of different companies down at the Reef Fleet Terminal of Cairns. A lot of the deals include a nice lunch and use of snorkeling equipment when you get to the island.

It’s really a fantastic day – relaxing and full of adventure!

Visit the village of Kuranda

The picturesque mountain retreat of Kuranda Village is just 25km northwest of Cairns, and is surrounded by World Heritage Rainforest. Visitors can travel to Kuranda on Kuranda’s Historic Scenic Railway or by car or bus, via the spectacular Kuranda Range Road or over the rainforest on Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

Kuranda has come a long way from its initial origins as a centre for those choosing an alternative lifestyle in the late 60’s. Historic Buildings from the villages past now house a variety of upmarket restaurants, cafes and bars. It is still laid back, but with a style and sophistication that sets it apart from other Cairns Highlands Venues and Attractions.

Kuranda’s shops and markets with their exotically handcrafted goods, Aboriginal artifacts, restaurants and coffee shops make Kuranda a well known day destination, but to truly enjoy the ambience this village has to offer you really have to stay a few nights. Take the time to visit some of Kuranda’s many first class nature based tourist attractions, which include koalas, butterflies, native and exotic birds, kangaroos and reptiles.

Don’t miss the famous Barron Falls, which are breathtaking. You can also see traditional Aboriginal dancers perform, travel on a riverboat on the mighty Barron River or join an Army Duck ride through the rainforest.

You can get to Kuranda using the Scenic Railway for $59.00 return or $58 return on the Skyrail Rainforest Cableway.

Local Walks Around Cairns

For those who want to spend their leisure time walking and keeping fit, here are two great walking tracks you can find around Cairns. These walks offer you a range of experiences, from short, easy strolls of a couple of hours to full-day walks.

Crystal Cascades to Lake Morris
This rough track that climbs from Crystal Cascades to Lake Morris starts just before the second picnic shelter. It is a steep climb for fit walkers and takes about an hour to get to Lake Morris. The track weaves through dense rainforest and is marked with flagging tape. It passes through open eucalypt forest then enters a complex vine forest after a short downhill section. There is a locked gate across the end of the road. Turn right and follow the main road to the second gate of the water reserve. From here it is only a short distance to the kiosk where you can get a meal and rehydrate for the walk back.

Lake Morris Road
Although this is not a walking track as such, it is a road leading to the city’s water supply. The experience of the 16km road to Lake Morris has one of the most spectacular views of Cairns. Visitors wanting to walk or run should be aware that the road is used by cars and is quite narrow. Locals can be seen cycling the 16km route though most will walk to the look-out which is only about 5 km from the start of Lake Morris Road.

Also known as Copperlode Dam the reservoir is breathtakingly beautiful. Swimming, fishing and water sports are not allowed. However, there is a kiosk, picnic and barbecue area.

This is one of the most beautiful, best kept secrets in the Cairns area.

How to get there
The lake is 25km inland from the city. Take Reservoir Road and look for the signposted turnoff to Lake Morris. The road is narrow, winding and without guardrails so if driving, watch out for cyclists, runners and wildlife on sharp corners. The site is open from 8 am to 6pm daily. You can get more information by phoning (07) 4055-7414.

The Leichhardt Organic Food and Farmer’s Market

The Leichhardt Organic Food and Farmers' Market is held each Saturday from 8am until 1pm in the grounds of the Orange Grove Public School, on the corner of Perry Street and Balmain Road.

It's a great little market with lots of tasty produce ranging from fresh fruit and veg to some of the best brownies in Sydney.

It’s a great way to do veggie shopping - great value, super fresh, and much more fun than a supermarket. Plus you can occasionally get fruit like apricots which are picked way to early by the supermarkets, and can only really be enjoyed when purchased from a farmers' market.

One great feature of the Leichardt market is that it's very close to the Rozelle Second Hand Markets which are open on Saturday and Sunday.

So for a super morning of Saturday market fun head over to Rozelle Markets for a browse through the bric-a-brac, and then drive or walk the short distance (about 2km, 30 mins walk) to the Leichardt markets to have brunch or lunch.

Clifton Gardens and Chowder Bay

The Clifton Gardens Pleasure Grounds surround the lovely Chowder Bay in Mosman, and is a great place for an afternoon of picnicing, strolling, swimming, snorkeling, bird watching, and even a spot of fishing if the mood takes you.

If you have snorkeling gear then definitely bring it along, as the netting which keeps the sharkies out plays host to a wonderful array of fish and even sea horses.

The view at night with the lights across the water is quite spectacular, and night snorkelling/diving also provides the most rewards. The fishing off the wharf is obviously also better at night.

If you have the stamina, a late afternoon stroll is recommended, then a swim, followed by a picnic to see the sun away and enjoy the lights, then some night diving (make sure you know what you are doing etc) or some fishing.

Remember if you do go fishing you'll need a licence ($6) which can be purchased online.

See the 131500 website for your best public transport options.

Ten Foods that help you lose weight

These 10 foods pack a nutritious punch with vitamins and minerals, which can help kick your weight loss into gear and fuel your body with the good stuff.

Blueberries
Loaded with anti-oxidants, phyto flavonoids and vitamin C, berries may help lower your risk of heart disease, cancer and act as an anti-inflammatory. Studies have also shown that blueberries may help with short-term memory loss associated with brain-ageing. The darker the colour, the more anti-oxidants. Best of all, you can enjoy berries all year round as frozen are just as good as fresh.

Extra-lean beef
A common nutrient deficiency in women is iron. Enjoying extra-lean beef in your diet is a guaranteed iron injection, without excess saturated fat. Iron helps make up haemoglobin, the oxygen-carrier in the blood. Without enough iron, you can suffer from fatigue, poor concentration and even increase your body's susceptibility to colds and infections.

Fresh herbs
Of the 50 foods highest in anti-oxidants, 13 are fresh herbs and spices. One study at the University of Oslo in Norway found oregano had 42 times more anti-oxidants than apples. One tablespoon of fresh oregano has the same free-radical fighting power as one medium-sized apple.

Legumes
Legumes, including chickpeas, kidney beans and black beans are low-GI foods which help regulate blood sugar and appetite. Black beans are particularly rich in fibre and nutrients, plus they're almost fat-free. Legumes can aid weight loss as they fill you up on fewer kilojoules and POINTS values than many meat sources of protein.

Oats
Not only packed with fibre, oats are brimming with protein, good fats and vitamins and minerals. They've been known to help ease the harmful effects of "bad" cholesterol and reduce blood pressure. Buy natural rolled oats (leave the sugar-loaded sachets on the shelf) and cook them in the microwave with skim milk, topped with banana and a drizzle of honey for a super-nutritious breakfast.

Oranges
Most famously know for their vitamin C, oranges also contain many phytochemicals thought to lower the risk of breast cancer, heart disease, and inflammatory conditions in women. Oranges also contain potassium, good for water balance between cells and assisting with high blood pressure.

Raw nuts
Each nut contains its own unique profile of phytochemicals, types of fatty acids, and amounts of fibre. Most nuts contain monounsaturated fat, which may help lower "bad" cholesterol. Remember to watch your portions as it's easy to eat too many.

Spinach
Popeye wasn't right about the iron content of spinach, as the form of iron in spinach is not as absorbable as animal sources. However, he was getting a great daily dose of B vitamin folate. Spinach is one of nature's best sources of folate, which helps prevent birth defects and may lower the risk of heart disease, dementia and even colon cancer.

Tomatoes
Tomatoes are well known for their high amounts of lycopene, which is considered a potential agent for prevention of some types of cancer. But this tasty fruit also packs other anti-oxidants, too, including betacarotene, vitamin E, and vitamin C. Tomatoes are truly one of nature's superfoods!

Yoghurt
Our digestive system needs a healthy amount of "good" bacteria in the digestive tract. One way we can assist good bacteria is by boosting probiotic intake. Look for low-fat yoghurt with active cultures such as acidophilus, but keep an eye on the sugar content. Yoghurt is also rich in protein, making it a filling snack.

Seafood Marinara

Ingredients

650g seafood marinara mix (Woolies sells a great mix or any seafood shop)
30g butter
1 medium onion, chopped
1 clove garlic, crushed
425g can tomatoes
60ml (¼ cup) dry white wine
60ml (¼ cup) water
1 tablespoon tomato paste
2 tablespoons cornflour
2 tablespoons water, extra
1 tablespoon chopped fresh parsley
1 tablespoon chopped fresh basil

Method

Combine butter, onion and garlic in large shallow dish, cover and simmer for a few minutes.  Add undrained crushed tomatoes, wine, water and tomato paste and simmer for a further 5-10 minutes.

Stir in blended cornflour and extra water, and cook for about 1 minute or until mixture boils and thickens. Add seafood marinara mix to hot tomato sauce and cook for about 3 minutes or until seafood is just tender; stir several times during cooking. Add chopped herbs and serve with a hot pasta (spaghetti or fettincini is great).
