Belinda Doherty, a Haberfield local for 3 years recommends a gourmet adventure to Sydney’s suburb of Haberfield

To get a real taste of ‘authentic Italian’ culture in Sydney, jump on a local bus from Central Station (either the 436, 437, 438 or the L40) to Haberfield. It’s a real Italian experience where you’ll feel like you’re almost in Italy (see Saturday mornings for proof). No more than $3.30 on the bus and 20 minutes later you’ll discover the best Italian food in Sydney.

Belinda suggests a full day itinerary along Haberfield’s main road, Ramsay Street. Start the day with a coffee hit at Espresso Galleria and a yummy treat from either one of the pattisseres, Sulfaro’s or Pasticceria Papa. Definitely try the biscotti and gelato and the home made Sicilian biscuits are a must!

When you’re feeling a little peckish for lunch, go to either of  the wood fired pizza restaurants: Dolcissimo, Napoli on Bocca or La Disfida. Known as the best pizzas in Sydney – try them with some local Italian beer and wine. The real Italian vibe is around everywhere you look – day or night. The hustle and bustle on a Saturday evening makes it a happening place for hungry diners.

At the end of the meal, visit the local bakery for some delicious crusty bread and Paesanella deli for their famous stuffed cheeses and take it home for an easy dinner for friends.

Belinda describes Haberfield as a “must-do for any traveller to Sydney, where you’ll really experience life as a local not to mention a bigger waistline”.

Crocodile Spotting in the Daintree

There are two species of crocodiles in Australia, the Saltwater and Freshwater species, and only the "salties" inhabit the Daintree River.  There are approximately 70 of them in the river.

If you’re interested in seeing one of these dinosaur-like creatures up close, take a river cruise on the Daintree River as it’s the best way of viewing these fascinating animals in the wild. The river guides know many of their hiding places and their habits, but there are factors which make it easier or harder to see them.

The river cruises are a beautiful, relaxing way to see the wildlife and learn about the fascinating mangrove ecosystems and if the crocodiles are hard to see, you may see a snake or a frog or some stunning Kingfishers.

A short trip from Cairns – and an excellent day out. Speak to David as he can assist you  with further tour details including how to get there and what deals we can arrange for you.

Inspire yourself with local art at Cairns Regional Gallery

Experience the vibrant visual arts of Tropical North Queensland at the Cairns Regional Gallery. Completed in 1936 - a stately two story building of brick and stone. In 1995, the building was renovated and re-opened as the Cairns Regional Gallery.

Cairns Regional Gallery hosts exhibitions of fine arts from major Australian and international collections covering historical and contemporary art including the work of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander artists.

Visitors to the Gallery can also witness the creativity of local artists living and working in one of Queensland’s most dynamic regional arts communities.

For many of Australia’s leading artists, the experience of the tropics was a major influence on their life and work. Artists including Russell Drysdale, Donald Friend, Ian Fairweather and Margaret Olley have all visited the region and Ray Crooke has made his home here for many years.

The Gallery is open to the public from 10:00am to 5:00pm Monday to Saturday, and from 1:00pm to 5:00pm on Sunday. Located at the corner of Abbott and Shields Streets.

Pyrmont Grower’s Market

The Pyrmont Growers Market is one of the largest and best organic and local producer markets in Sydney.

It now has over 85 stalls selling everything from cheese and meat to coffee and fruit.

The market is held on the first Saturday of every month from 7am to 11am in the Pyrmont Bay Park opposite Star City Casino. You can easily walk there.

All the food sold is restricted by food miles, so you know that it's local produce which has contributed less to global warming.

It makes such a difference buying food from the people who actually produce it, and more often than not it tastes better as well.

Govinda's Restaurant and Movie Theatre

Looking for a movie theatre with a little bit of character? One of the most characterful in Sydney is Govinda's, a kind of one-stop-shop for yoga and movie enthusiasts.

You get to lounge about on almost horizontal sofas without any armrests or tables getting in the way.

Govinda's can be found in the always fun suburb of Darlinghurst, in the inner east. It's a very walkable distance from the city centre (about 30 minutes), you can usually find a park, or catch a bus down Oxford or William St. For a map log onto: http://govindas.sitesuite.ws/page/map.html

There are lots of great restaurants in Darlinghurst however for the full experience it’s recommended that you eat at Govinda's itself before the movie. The food matches the decor. In fact they offer a $28.60 all you can eat vegetarian buffet and movie ticket deal.

The movies they show are an odd mix of latest blockbusters, old favourites, and international cinema. You can view the schedule at http://www.govindas.com.au.
Booking beforehand is not usually necessary, however on a Friday or Saturday night it’s recommended.

Barefoot Bowls

Bare feet are healthy feet – go bare feet!

Lawn bowls is now a really popular weekend past time for people of all ages. Grab a couple of friends and take off your shoes for a casual afternoon of bowling on the green.

Many local clubs open up access to their greens for barefooted people such as yourself to run around on a sunny afternoon with no shoes on and drink in hand pretending that you know how to get a wobbly ball to go where you want it to.

It's fun for you and generates much needed extra income for the clubs which would otherwise be turned into multi-story carparks.

Make sure you read up on the rules so you can appear wise in the ways of the wonky ball to your friends.

Here is a list of lawn bowls clubs in Sydney http://www.bcl.com.au/sydney/sport/lawnbowls.htm. Most of them have barefoot bowling times, check with the one nearest you.

Are you ready for a 7-Day Detox?

If you have managed to give up alcohol and caffeine and bump up your antioxidant and fiber intake without experiencing more than mild side effects, then you are ready to try a proper detox, and a 7-day plan is a good starting point.

Before you start

Here are some general guidelines before you start your 7-day detox, which will help you to plan ahead and have a greater chance of success.

    •    Buy a wide range of the foods listed on the detox shopping list (http://www.detoxaustralia.com.au/detox_shopping_list.html)

    •    Decide which herbs and supplements you want to take and buy them from a good complementary chemist.

    •    Buy a skin brush, Epsom salts and any oils, flower essences, foot patches or other treatments you are planning to use at home

    •    Book appointments for any complementary therapies that you would like to aid your detox methods

Rules of the 7 Day Detox

  • No caffeine or alcohol is allowed. Substitute herb teas, dandelion root coffee and fresh juices.

  • No dairy foods are permitted on the 7-day detox. Milk and cheese increase mucus production and are difficult to digest. Lactose is a common food intolerance. You can replace milk with almond milk, rice milk, oat milk or soya milk. Sheep’s and goat’s products are easier to digest if you really cannot do without dairy (though it’s better to avoid them)

  • No wheat or gluten-containing grains, such as rye, which have an acid effect on the digestion. This means no bread, pasta or white rice. Choose oats, brown rice, millet and quinoa instead.

  • No meat or poultry, because of the antibiotics and food additives they contain. For protein, choose plant sources, organic eggs, tofu or oily fish from organic (non-farmed) sources.

  •  No processed or ready-made foods whatsoever. Everything should be fresh and cooked without salt, sugar or sweeteners. Use fresh herbs for seasoning.

  • Eat three meals and two snacks every day, making sure that you have something to eat every three hours. Most of your food will be vegetables and fruit, whole grains and plant proteins.

  • Do make sure that you get at least 20 minutes of exercise every day,

  • Drink 2 litres of water a day and have cups of herbal (non-caffeine-containing) teas whenever you feel like them.

  • Dry-brush your skin before a shower or bath at least once a day and, if you can bear it, follow your bathing routine with a cold shower.

What can you expect from a 7 Day Detox?
Headaches and fatigue are normal in the first few days of a detox. Some people even feel as though they are coming down with flu, a syndrome that complementary therapists call a ‘healing crisis’. What is happening is that old chemicals stored in fat tissues are being released into the bloodstream: antibiotics, pesticides, food additives, heavy metals and other waste products. Some people break out in spots as their body sheds toxins through the skin; others get constipation, diarrhea or bad breath with the change in digestive routine; yet more feel giddy and nauseous.

Take it easy and keep drinking 2 litres of water throughout the day. If the symptoms don’t pass in four days, consult a doctor to rule out any underlying illness.

Although you won’t purge a lifetime’s worth of toxins during your first-ever 7 day detox, you will have made a significant difference. Next time you try a detox, the healing crisis won’t be so severe and will probably not last so long.

A 7-day detox is a step towards better health but you should find that by the end of it, your skin looks clearer and glowing, and you feel more energetic and clear-headed. Your bowels and liver should function more efficiently and you’ll have given your immune system a mini-boost.

Weight loss From a 7 Day Detox
Most people lose weight when they detox, because they are avoiding fats, sugars and all the other foods and drinks that pile on the calories. If you return to your previous eating patterns after seven days, you will soon replace any kilos you have lost. If you have more weight to lose, continue eating according to the detox rules, but reintroduce organic meats and poultry, wheat and dairy, as described below. Stay off processed and packaged foods and keep eating fresh as much as possible. You probably will not need to calorie-count or reduce your portions – few people overeat on such a healthy diet. The only danger is slipping back to old ways of eating.

For a specific 7-day meal plan, check out this site:

http://www.detoxaustralia.com.au/menu_plans_for_7_day_detox.htm

Looking for a great tasting steak marinade?

Here’s one?
( Use any cut of meat: Rump, Porterhouse, Rib Eye, Sirloin).

An easy one that will take only 10 minutes to prepare and is always a success is to combine 1 cup red wine with ¼ cup Worcestershire sauce and 1 tablespoon mustard. You can also add chilli sauce, tomato or barbecue sauce to taste. Allow meat to marinate in the fridge for several hours or overnight for maximum flavour and tenderness.

The marinated rump steak or beef strips are great cooked on the BBQ or grill or if strips, in a stir fry. Store any excess marinade that you don’t need in the fridge ready for your next BBQ or stir fry!

Easy Steak Marinades:

Italian Marinade

Garlic Soy Marinade
Italian salad dressing (vinaigrette style)
Garlic clove, chopped
Onion, chopped
Salt and Pepper to taste

1 tbsp. garlic salt
2-3 tbsp. soy sauce
1 tbsp. tomato sauce
1 tbsp. vegetable oil
1/2 tsp. pepper

Tangy Marinade

Citrus Marinade
3/4 cup salad oil
1/2 cup tomato sauce
1/4 tsp. Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp. dry mustard
1 mashed clove garlic
1/4 tsp. lemon juice
3/4 tsp. salt
1/4 tsp. pepper

1/2 cup orange juice
1/4 cup soy sauce
1 clove garlic, crushed
2 dashes ground cloves
